School Noise Surveys to BB93
Noise surveys are an integral part of any new school or education facility, to meet the internal noise requirements of BB93, and to minimise disturbance to neighbouring properties.
Noise Surveys for Schools
A noise survey and noise assessment can be an essential part of a school or higher education facility, particularly those in busy, dense urban areas.
The aim of a noise survey is to quantify the baseline noise environment at the proposed site and surrounding area. With this information, the potential noise impact on the students and teachers at a school/education facility can be assessed. It is critical that noise levels are controlled to an acceptable level both internally and externally, to provide a productive learning environment.
We also need to make sure that a new school with noisy kids doesn’t create an adverse noise impact on existing residents and sensitive premises in the area.
What is the purpose of a BB93 Noise Assessment / Survey?
Provide a quiet learning environment
To allow students to concentrate, communicate, and learn without distraction, it is important to external noise ingress is controlled. A noisy classroom is neither good for students or teachers. Is it mandatory for a school to achieve the internal noise requirements of BB93.
Protect existing properties in the area
Schools have several sources of noise, whether it be playgrounds and MUGAs, parents dropping off and collecting, music rooms and performance spaces, or fixed mechanical plant to service the building. We need to ensure that local residents are going to be adversely impacted by noise to ensure a successful planning application.
How can our Noise Consultants help?
Baseline Noise Surveys
Our surveyors can get to schools all over the UK and can conduct BB93 noise surveys spanning between a couple of hours to several weeks. Call now and we could be at your site in 2-3 days if it's really last minute!
Noise Map Modelling
To use one word to describe our approach to noise assessments, they are 'comprehensive'. We produce 3D noise mapping of new schools in order to fully assess the sound reduction requirements of the building envelope, elevation by elevation, floor by floor. Our attention to detail leads to not only a robust noise assessment, but also one that is cost effective for our clients.
High Quality Noise Survey Reports
Our noise survey reports leave no stone unturned. But worry not, they are also structured in a way which is easy to follow. Our noise survey reports tell a clear story which instills confidence with the Environmental Healh Officer (EHO), and is clear to the client about the next steps.

Key Aspects of a School Noise Assessment
Noise Impact on Students and Staff
Is the noise climate acceptable for future occupants? Can we control noise ingress into classrooms and external teaching areas? Key points include:
– The ventilation strategy and whether natural ventilation can be used whlst still meeting BB93 indoor ambient noise level targets.
– The sound reduction requirements for glazing, external walls, and roofs, including to protect against rain impact noise.
Operational Noise Impact on Other Developments
Will noise from the development once operational adversely on existing properties in the area? Key points include:
– Noise from playgrounds, MUGAs, and sports pitches.
– Noise breakout from high noise level internal spaces such as music rooms, resistant materials workshops, and sports halls.
– Plant noise emissions from building services (assessing in accordance with BS 4142).
Construction Noise Impact on Other Developments
Dos the temporary impact of construction noise need to managed if the school is in a dense urban area?
Or perhaps the development is an extension to an existing school? How can noise be managed to allow lessons to continue whilst there is construction noise all around?
Guidelines for School Noise Surveys
BB93 - Building Bulletin 93 - Acoustic Design of Schools
The mandatory guidelines under the Building Regulations. BB93 is a specific acoustic design standard which applies to schools and higher education facilities. All new and refurbished/change of use schools must follow the internal noise level criteria within.
WHO ‘Guidelines for Community Noise’
Also commonly referenced within local planning policy, the Guidelines for Community Noise sets out guidance as to noise levels at which there will be an unacceptable impact on residential dwellings. This guidance considers many different types of noise sources., including those associated with schools.
BS 5228 ‘Code of practice for noise and vibration control on construction and open sites – Part 1: Noise’
The go to construction noise guidelines with appropriate noise limits, typical noise levels from construction activites, and a methodology for predicting levels of construction noise. BS 5228 Part 2 also covers vibration from construction sites.
BS 4142:2014 ‘Methods for rating and assessing industrial and commercial sound’
If an education facility has a mechanical ventilation system, then a BS 4142 assessment will be needed 99% of the time. It is intended to be used to assess the potential adverse impact of sound of an industrial and/or commercial nature, at nearby noise-sensitive receptor (NSR) locations within the context of the existing sound environment.
