Extract System Noise Surveys and Noise Assessments - BS4142
New restaurants, takeaways, and bars can often required a BS 4142 noise assessment to consider the impact of noise from kitchen extraction systems, refrigeration plant, and ventilation condensers.
Commercial Extract Plant Noise Assessments across the UK
As experts in commercial extraction plant noise, we have years of experience conducting noise surveys and noise impact assessments for kitchen extracts, refridgeration condensers. and air conditioning plant across the UK.
We provide a nationwide service, conducting noise surveys to support planning applications and planning conditions.

Why do I need an Extract Plant Noise Assessment?
Extraction system noise assessments are usually required to support a planning application, often applying to cafes, takeaways, restaurants, bars… anything with a commercial kitchen. Such kitchens require extract ventilation fans, with flues running outside the building, often exhausting within a few metres of a residential window. These can be a huge cause of complaints if the extract fan ducting does not contain a silencer, with the fans running for much of the day and late into the evening.
The same principle applies to refrigeration condensers and air conditioning plant – if it’s nearby to residential dwellings, then it’s liable to cause a noise complaint. Many catering businesses make the mistake of implanting such systems without planning permission, often resulting in an enforcement notice and subsequent re-installation of extract systems, a costly thing to do…! All because of noise complaints.
The requirements for a noise assessment can vary from one local authority to the next. Some authorities will set fixed extraction system noise limits outside neighbouring windows – a condition which can be discharged by a desktop report using a 3D noise model to predict noise emissions.
Other councils will require a full BS 4142:2014 noise assessment – involving a ‘baseline noise survey’ conducted at the property over several hours or even days. The noise emissions from the extraction plant are then assessed against a ‘representative background sound level’ determined from the noise survey – generally requiring the plant noise rating level to at least lower or equal to the background noise level, in some cases as much as 10 dB below.
Typical Plant Noise Planning Conditions
Typical Extraction System Noise Assessment
Background Sound Level Measurements
A trip to site to measured baseline noise levels from a few hours to a few days - before the extraction plant is installed, or if a retrospective application, with the extraction fan turned off.
Noise Predictions of noise emissions from the Extraction Plant
We will produce calculations or even a 3D noise model (at no extra cost) to predict the plant noise emissions at nearby residential windows.
Analysis of Noise Impact
The predicted plant noise emissions are assessed against the background noise level in accordance with BS 4142:2014 - or a fixed level if stipulated in the planning condition/consultation from the Environmental Health Officer.
Noise Mitigation Recommendations
If predicted noise emissions from the extract plant is too high, we'll tell you how to deal with it. This may be an in-duct silencer, a cowl at the end of the flue, relocation of the flue away from windows, an acoustic enclosure, acoustic barrier, or a different extractor plant, condenser unit, etc.
Robust Noise Assessment Reports
Our noise assessments are highly detailed, but also structured in a way which is easy to follow. Our reports tell a clear story which instills confidence with the Environmental Health Officer (EHO) at the local council.
Our Approach to Extractor Plant Noise Assessments
First of all, we need to determine the local planning authorities requirements. This impacts on whether site visits are required to conduct a baseline noise survey are required, or whether a cheaper desktop noise assessment will do the job.
Secondly, if a baseline noise survey is required, we take a look at other planning applications in the area. For example, when assessing a takeaway restaurant on a high street, there’s a good chance that there are other restaurants which have recently installed new extraction plant, and may have had noise surveys conducted from which data can be re-used, saving on the cost of a new survey.
Thirdly, we will do an initial desktop review – if we think the extraction system is going to be noisy and is unlikely to meet criteria, we will be upfront about this before progressing with the assessment, so our clients can fully understand additional costs they may have to fork out for mitigation, before paying for our services.
Finally, if we progress with the assessment, then we can usually turn these around within 1 – 2 weeks. Give us a call, if we have equipment free, we could be at site the next day.

"ParkerJones Acoustics recently helped us to discharge a planning condition and was very professional and accommodating. Chris (director) worked alongside us to model various window configurations of the property to establish where acoustic mitigation measures were required. This enabled our client to address matters strategically rather than simply blanketing the whole site with the worst-case scenario, in turn saving our client time and money. I would not hesitate to recommend ParkerJones Acoustics and I look forward to working alongside him soon."
