Noise is often the main concern for proposed skateparks. And to be fair… it should be, skateparks can be noisy places when busy. Furthermore, they’re usually located centrally in the community, with residential properties a stones throw away.
However, there is often a perception that a skatepark is far noisier or more disturbing than other forms of recreational developments such as playgrounds and sports pitches. Is that correct? Well not necessarily.
With the right approach, skateparks and residents can operate side by side without disturbance through careful consideration of noise emissions and how to mitigate them. Our noise assessments and noise surveys for skateparks are designed to assess the initial impact of noise, and then suggest suitable mitigation measures to control it.
Keys to Assessing Noise from Skateparks
Noise Survey
Most local authorities will require noise from skateparks to be assessed against the existing background noise level, determined from a baseline noise survey.
Noise Modelling
We create a bespoke 3D noise map model of the skatepark in action, accounting for 'rolling noise' (from wheels), 'impact noise' (jumps, tricks, falls...) and people noise, predicting noise emissions to nearby residential properties.
Noise Mitigation and Planning
Simple changes to the layout of a skatepark and the use of artistic noise barriers can be creative ways of screening local residents from noise.
Acoustic Guidelines relevant to Skateparks
World Health Organisation (WHO) ‘Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region’
A commonly applied guidelines for residential developments which suggest suitable internal noise levels in residential properties for good living/sleeping conditions, and external noise levels which would constitute a “moderate” or “serious” annoyance.
BS 8233:2014 ‘Guidance on sound insulation and noise reduction for buildings’
Internal noise levels inside bedrooms should not exceed 30 dB LAeq at night or 35 dB LAeq during the day. Hence noise emissions from skateparks should seek to not exceed this target at nearby residential properties with open windows.

Considering the impact of an increase/change in average ambient sound levels from the existing baseline.
The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) guidance document ‘Clay Target Shooting: Guidance on the Control of Noise’ (2003)
Contains a method for assessing short high level impulsive sounds, which could apply to some of the noise characteristics experienced in a skate park.
