Sports and Leisure Noise Surveys/Assessments
Noise generated by sports and leisure facilities can often have an adverse impact on the surrounding community if not assessed and mitigated appropriately.
This why planning applications for facilities such as sports pitches, MUGAs, skateparks and gyms require a Noise Impact Assessments.
ParkerJones Acoustics consultants work tirelessly and pragmatically to produce noise impact assessments in double quick time… and more importantly, get them approved!
How can our Noise Consultants help?

Baseline Noise Surveys
Our surveyors can get to sites all over the UK and can conduct noise surveys spanning between a couple of hours to several weeks. Call now and we could be at your site in 2-3 days.

Noise Predictions
We use complex 3D noise modelling software on all of our projects to accurately predict noise emissions from both new and existing noise sources. This is done to a high degree of accuracy and allows us to predict noise emissions at any point, from any source. Clear, visual, and much easier to interpret than a spreadsheet calculation, this gives our reports a solid foundation.

High Quality Noise Impact Assessment Reports
Our noise impact assessment reports leave no stone unturned. But don't worry, they are also structured in a way which is easy to follow. Our noise survey reports tell a clear story which instills confidence with the Environmental Healh Officer (EHO), and is clear to the client about the next steps. they need to take.

Noise Management Plans
In most cases there is no magic solution to guarantee that there won't be a noise impact on local residents. Hence for many Councils, submitting a Noise Management Plan that outlines the measures that a facility will take to minimise noise is a great step forward to achieving planning permission.
Sports and Leisure Facility Noise Surveys
If a development generates a lot of noise, and it’s near to a residential area, then chances are that some consideration needs to be given to assessing and managing noise.
The most frequent reason for needing a noise impact assessment is for planning permission. These are requested by local authorities to establish the noise impacts from a development.
Sports facilities such as artificial grass pitches (AGP), multi-use games areas (MUGA), skate parks all generate a high level of noise. The same can be said for less common sports, i.e. motorsports or shooting ranges, or recreational activities such as zip lining and zorbing. Entertainment venues including cinemas, pubs, bars, nightclubs, theatres, wedding venues and festivals are all obvious contenders for causing an adverse noie impact, due to their late hours of operation and high levels of noise generation.
ParkerJones Acoustics are experienced and able to take on noise impact assessments for any sort of sport and leisure facility.
We produce highly detailed noise reports based upon a combination of baseline noise monitoring and detailed 3D noise mapping, referrering to various guidelines to build a consensus on the level of impact, and if necessary, to recommend how noise can be mitigated.
Furthermore, we can produce a robust and sensible Noise Management Plan for the facility to follow to demonstrate a willingness to reduce noise levels as much as possible, in a practical and reasonable way.
Noise Impact Assessments for the Sport and Leisure Sector
Sports Pitch
Noise Assessment
Artifical grass pitches can generate noise from players shouting, whistles, balls striking fencing, and hockey boards hitting backboards. Our assessments are made following Sport England’s guidance on Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) Acoustics.
MUGA and Playground Noise Surveys
Similar to artifical pitches, MUGAs can be used in a similar manner, with the added risks of noise generated by bouncing basketballs and children shouting. Whilst there is no set way of assessing these types of spaces, a consensus can be gained by assessing against several guidelines.
Gym Noise Assessments
Whilst Gyms are an indoor establishment, they pose a unique risk on dwellings within the same building, from weight drops on to the floor, treadmill impacts, high levels music associated with spin classes, and plant noise from the ventilation system.
Leisure Centre Noise Assessments
Incorporating a variety of internal and external sports, a Leisure Centre can have many sources of noise. It can also be important to create good acoustic conditions inside the Leisure Centre itself!
Clubs, Pubs and Bars Noise Assessments
Another obvious candidate for a noise assessment, introducing potentially loud music, outdoor seating areas, and kitchen ventilation plant. If sharing a party wall or floor, or just within a residential area, then a noise impact assessment is likely to be required.
Public Events Noise Assessments
Music festivals, concerts, wedding venues, sporting stadia, outdoor activities like zip lines… these all generate noise, and that noise needs to be assessed. We have a good track record of helping out clients put on both permanent and temporary events.
Skatepark Noise Assessments
With the right approach, skateparks and residents can operate side by side without disturbance through careful consideration of noise emissions and how to mitigate them. Our noise assessments and noise surveys for skateparks are designed to assess the initial impact of noise, and then suggest suitable mitigation measures to control it.
Wedding Venue Noise Management
Many wedding venues are in the countryside, where it’s nice and quiet. Even if there are only a handful of residential properties around, that are several hundred metres away, a noise assessment is still needed. Low frequency sound energy from music associated with the wedding reception can still travel a long way
Motorsport Noise Assessments
Motorsport tracks are usually built far away from residential properties. But sometimes, an old farm, an old quarry… may be turned into a motocross track, with scattered residential properties in the area, which is when problems can start to arise!
Sports/Leisure Noise Impact Assessment Guidelines

BS 8233:2014 ‘Guidance on Sound Insulation and Noise Reduction for Buildings’
This is the most commonly referenced guideline in local planning policy and planning conditions. The guidelines suggests appropriate criteria and limits for different situations. This includes internal and external noise criteria for residential developments impacted by a variety of noise sources.

WHO ‘Guidelines for Community Noise’
...and the more recently published ‘Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region’ (2018), which suggest suitable internal noise levels in residential properties for good living/sleeping conditions, and external noise levels which would constitute a “moderate” or “serious” annoyance in gardens/patio areas;

BS 4142:2014 ‘Methods for rating and assessing industrial and commercial sound’
If an development has a mechanical ventilation system, then a BS 4142 noise assessment will be needed 99% of the time. It is intended to be used to assess the potential adverse impact of sound of an industrial and/or commercial nature, at nearby noise-sensitive receptor (NSR) locations within the context of the existing sound environment. Occasionally, an EHO may request the assessment to consider this standard, even if not an industrial noise source.

The ‘Guidelines for Environmental Noise Impact Assessment’ (2014)
Produced by the Institute of Environment Management & Assessment (IEMA), which considers the impact of an increase/change in average ambient sound levels from the existing baseline.

‘Clay Target Shooting: Guidance on the Control of Noise
This Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) guidance document contains a method for assessing short high level impulsive sounds. It is specific to assessing noise from clay pigeon shooting, but the principles can also apply to some of the noise characteristics experienced from hockey ball hitting backboards.

The Sport England Design Guidance Note Artificial Grass Pitch (AGP) Acoustics
Planning Implications document published in 2015 was written to provide guidance on the planning implications of artificial pitches, particularly with regards to acoustics, the main stumbling block in the design of such pitches close to sensitive residential areas.

Code of Practice on Environmental Noise Control at Concert
‘The Code of Practice’ provides guidance on minimising the disturbance or annoyance to local residents in the vicinity of “large music events involving high powered amplification… held in sporting stadia, arenas, open air sites and within lightweight buildings”. The Code of Practice was produced in 1995 by the Noise Council, which is a group of professional bodies including the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) amongst others.

Noise from Pubs and Clubs Phase II Final Report
An extensive research study undertaken to rank “the impact of entertainment noise occurring infrequently for more than an hour after 23.00 hours”.
