Wedding Venue Noise Assessments and Noise Surveys
Wedding venues are unique in that they are often high noise generating events (with DJs and bands), but in the middle of the countryside in the quiet. A noise assessment and noise survey is regularly required to gain licensing and planning permission.
Noise Assessments for Wedding Venues
So you’ve designed a lovely function wedding venue… but what’s that, the EHO is concerned about noise pollution?
We’re not surprised.
Many wedding venues are in the countryside, where it’s nice and quiet. Even if there are only a handful of residential properties around, that are several hundred metres away, a noise assessment is still needed. Low frequency sound energy from music associated with the wedding reception can still travel a long way.
However, wedding venues and residents can operate side by side without disturbance through careful consideration of noise emissions and how to mitigate them. Our noise assessments and noise surveys for wedding venues are designed to assess the initial impact of noise, and then suggest suitable mitigation measures to control it.
We have succesfully helped a number of new wedding operators gain planning permission for their venues around the UK.
Keys to Assessing Noise from Wedding Venues
Most local authorities will require noise from weddings after 11pm to be assessed against the existing background noise level, determined from a baseline noise survey.
We create a bespoke 3D noise map model of the wedding venue in action, i.e. with a band or DJ, taking into account the building (or marquee), and predicting noise emissions to nearby residential properties.
Noise Mitigation and Planning
Noise can be mitigation through constructions, or through operational measures, i.e. limiting noise levels on the dancefloor, or stopping music at a certain time.
A noise consultants guide to managing noise from wedding and entertainment venues. A noise assessment/noise management plan is critical for a succesful planning application.
The keys to a Noise Management Plan for a successful planning application
Over the years we’ve learnt exactly what measures that local councils are looking for a wedding venue to take.
The key to a good noise assessment is an even better noise management plan.
It is important that wedding operators are considerate and proactive to dealing with noise issues that may occur with local residents. This can go a long way to partially offsetting the noise impact.
And there are a number of simple measures that can be taken to mitigate noise as well.

Acoustic Guidelines relevant to Wedding Venues
Code of Practice on Environmental Noise Control at Concerts
For indoor venues "used for up to about 30 events per calendar year", noise due to music should not exceed the existing background sound level at nearby noise-sensitive properties by more than 5 dB(A), or exceed 70 dB at low frequency (63 Hz or 125 Hz).
Internal noise levels inside bedrooms should not exceed 30 dB LAeq at night or 35 dB LAeq during the day. Hence noise emissions from wedding venues should seek to not exceed this target at nearby residential properties with open windows.
Noise from Pubs and Clubs
Similar to BS 8233:2014, where noise may be acceptable after 11pm in dwellings at below around 30 dB LAeq.
Not applicable to recreational/music noise, but applies to any fixed mechanical plant associated with the development, such as ventilation systems and kitchen extracts. Noise from these should not increase the existing background noise level at nearby noise-sensitive receptors.
